Sometimes You Get a Good Guy......

Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. our HVAC guy stopped at our house to fix our air conditioner issue. Within 8 minutes- he had diagnosed and fixed the problem. The capacitor had burned out and needed to be replaced. We were no longer under warranty but he still replaced it and didn't charge us a dime. He mentioned a larger HVAC company in the area and relayed that a capacitor costs $30.00 but that this larger company charged customers $130.00 of the part! I had recently spoken with someone who used the same company and was charged $8,000.00 to replace a unit! That is double it should have cost!
This kind of honesty and good work deserves a mention and Hubby and I give out his name all the time. He is the kind of guy you would like for all avenues of repairs.

That's my story.

I know it is near impossible to boycott all of the companies, but let's make an effort. Double check those labels, switch banks, switch telephone services, buy different shoes-anything that impacts their bottom line.

Abortion and the gay marriage fiasco finally brought me to a point where I have given up Diet Dr. Pepper. Coca Cola supports both sins and I just couldn't stomach-literally.

Praying for Abortionists

For decades, I have prayed outside of abortion clinics. During the days of Operation Rescue, I went to jail with brother priests and faithful men and women. I have seen men and women on their knees in snow, and rain, and blistering heat, praying for unborn children suffering agony and death. I have prayed for their mothers, their fathers, their grandparents. In the best circumstances, I have seen women turn away from abortion—choosing life, and choosing freedom.
Of course, I’ve prayed for those who perform abortions, or facilitate them. I’ve prayed for their conversions. And I’ve celebrated when men and women like Dr. Bernard Nathanson and Abby Johnson turn away from the practice of barbarism.
But until this week, I have never really grasped the degree to which people in the abortion industry are enslaved, corrupted, and abused by the culture of death. In the debate over Planned Parenthood’s legal compliance, and in the quibbling over the methods of the Center for Medical Progress, the people performing abortions should not be forgotten.
Anyone who can casually discuss tearing children to shreds while having lunch and a good cabernet is a victim of the father of lies. Anyone who thinks that divvying up murdered bodies does “a little bit of extra good” is a captive subject of the dictatorship of relativism. This video reminds me that anyone who traffics in abortion loses a vital and beautiful spark of humanity. Evil coarsens us and deadens us—robs us of the freedom life offers.
Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish priest imprisoned at Auschwitz in 1941. He spent four months there before dying a martyr’s death. During those four months, Father Kolbe was beaten with regularity. His cellmates were beaten as well. He prayed for his captors. He asked his cellmates to do the same. He reminded them that the same evil that destroyed the bodies of prisoners was destroying the souls of his captors. Many of the guards were young. Many of them were conscripts. Many of them chose profoundly evil acts, with full moral culpability. But each one of those who tortured Father Kolbe was a human being, an immortal soul, who had been seduced, ensnared, or possessed by the lies of the Evil One.
Father Kolbe prayed for his tormentors. They were not his enemies. Their salvation was the prize he hoped to gain by the witness of holy love, and holy martyrdom.

St. Nikolai Velimirovic, a Serbian bishop imprisoned by the Nazis at Dachau, once composed this prayer:

2015: THE VILLAGE OF STEPANCHIKOVO

 

 

 

I think you know that I am a huge fan of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and so it is no surprised I finished another of his works.

 

 

I actually think this is a great book for someone to start with on the road to his darker works like Crime and Punishment and Demons.

It is a lighter piece which encompasses nothing but chaotic comedy from the start to end but introduces you to Dostoyevsky's fantastic writing style.

 

My second choice would be Poor Folk which ( I believe) was his first novel.



Cheaters Eat Chicken Pot Pie

The crust tends to take the longest when making a chicken pot pie. I am sure other people have come up with this, but I thought it would be cool to use egg roll wraps instead of making a crust. Yes, I am a cheater.

These are very thin which is great if you don't want the heaviness of a bread product.

I sprayed the tray and buttered these a bit to ensure there wouldn't be burning. I also baked these in the oven for a few minutes at 400 degrees for one batch and then not at all in another batch. I would coat with butter first and then bake before adding the filling.

Chicken, carrots, green onions, and mushrooms mixed with broth, seasoning, and a little cream. I think I may have added a touch of flour for thickening. Tumeric really coloured the dish.

Hubby really liked these and they are so compact!

Matthew 8:12 “But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

The Supreme Court ruling apparently has Christians living as exiles in their own country, this according to Rod Dreher:

…orthodox Christians must understand that things are going to get much more difficult for us. We are going to have to learn how to live as exiles in our own country.

You might think that the verse I cite above is in reference to these exiled Christians in the United States.  You would be wrong.  I mean it as literally as Jesus meant it; this might help:

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

Back to Dreher:

No, the sky is not falling — not yet, anyway — but with the Supreme Court ruling constitutionalizing same-sex marriage, the ground under our feet has shifted tectonically.

Dreher is right – the sky isn’t falling; it fell, long ago.  Nothing has shifted tectonically with this decision.

It was American Christians that led the charge to public funding of education.  Millions of American Christians continue to send their children to public schools today.  The state will educate your children – how did that work out?

It is American Christians who demand that their Christian private schools meet all standards of government curriculum.

American Christians support the military and wars; the killing of countless millions of non-combatants – people who never presented a threat – does not cause a flinch.  On every holiday, they turn their house of worship into a house of warship.

American Christians support the brutality of the State of Israel.

American Christians support torture.

American Christians leave benevolent good works to the state.

American Christians support the drug wars, turning individuals who – at worst – have an unhealthy habit or addiction into hardened criminals.

American Christians look to salvation by the state:

Voting Republican and other failed culture war strategies are not going to save us now.

Now?  NOW?

How stupid do you have to be, American Christian, to have ever believed in salvation by state?  For by State are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of the Republican Party.

Name one example of when voting Republican “saved” you.  You have served yourself up on a silver platter.  Now you are being skinned.

Dreher’s solution?

It is time for what I call the Benedict Option….Throughout the early Middle Ages, Benedict’s communities formed monasteries, and kept the light of faith burning through the surrounding cultural darkness. Eventually, the Benedictine monks helped refound civilization.

This takes courage; it takes dedication.  The cost will be high.

American Christians couldn’t stand tall when the cost was minimal; why will they do so now?

2015 READING BOOK UPDATE

I finished the four booklets about kindness written by Father Lawrence Lovasik. These booklets were used by Sophia Press to write the book I read earlier this year.

I can't recommend these booklets enough! I struggle with kindness and being too judgmental and found them helpful. The fourth booklet resonated the most with me but all of them are a treasure chest of truly Christ like love. 

I think many of us lack true charity and look upon compassion as being soft or weak. Read these booklets and you will gain a new perspective.

Things I Have Learned.....

I have been traveling back and forth between two states for over ten years now. Along the way I have learned a few things that make my life a little bit easier especially with flying becoming more tedious with each flight.


1. Taking time off from work before you leave.

 Not only do I add an extra day to ready myself and my home for a trip- I add a second day. Now, I know a person can't always do this, but it really helps if you can. I try to leave a little bit early from work on the last day before vacation and utilize that time to do some last minute errands (or anything that requires me to leave the home).  The next day is spent handling deep cleaning projects like washing all the bed sheets, scrubbing down air vents, ironing, washing and polishing floors - you get the picture. The day before the trip is used to handle any last minute bill payments, tidying up the house, getting rid of all trash, and packing my travel bag and purse.


2. I splurge on beverages when I travel.

The TSA and their infringement on my rights as a traveler really gets on my nerves. I used to pack food and drink when I traveled but not so much now. I will bring a snack or two but I purchase my drinks before boarding the flight. This is a steep purchase for those on budget but it is also nice to have drink ready when you need it and not when the flight attendant can bring one around to you. This is especially helpful for someone like me who needs to drink water on an almost constant basis. You can also bring an empty water bottle and fill up at the water fountains with the installed fountain for bottle. This is a wonderful option many airports now offer.


3. Always bring second best.

I only travel with costume jewelry and second best make up products. I know we all want to look our best but why deal with the stress of losing something and/or someone stealing from you in those TSA lines? We hear about it all the time on the news and I would rather just not deal with it. So, no real jewelry for me and what I pack is usually on the lower end of things I enjoy. True, I might look second rate, but I think I already do.

4. Reading material

In a day when everyone is on the computer and listening to music- I find that travel is a great excuse for me to turn off from the world. I always make sure to bring a spiritual book, a few magazines, and a great classic read. The variety helps with the duration of the trip and I can normally knock out a couple of books.

5. Wipe it down

I can't tell you how important it is to have your own supply of tissues, aspirin, allergy medication and wipes (to clean the area you will be sitting) as you travel.  As you can tell, I like to be in control of the situation as much as I can.

Budget Talk: Earning Money on the Side….and more!

Inspired by the multiple amortization schedules I have been pulling to pay off my mortgage sooner- I have opted to earn more money and save money!

There are a couple of gals at work who are crazy into couponing. Their enthusiasm has kind of helped me get back into the coupon business. I have decided to coupon and set up deals for CVS and a local grocery store. This week I picked up free deodorant and at CVS I started the ball rolling with $12.00 in ECB’s.  

I have also signed up to become a mystery shopper. My first adventure was shopping a local restaurant which didn’t pay anything but reimbursed up to $35.00.  You do you have to observe quite a lot and time things but it still is a free meal and a chance to get out . Once you return home, upload a copy of the receipt and complete a detailed survey. I would say the survey takes about 30 minutes and the company is very picky and may reject the entire survey.

There are various opportunities and you simply choose what works for you.  I observed one assignment that would pay you $70.00 and reimburse you for certain purchases. I wasn’t qualified for this one but that is great for someone who could do this!
