Have I become.......cheap?

I have been looking at the same skirt and blouse for three days now trying to decide as to whether or not to purchase them.... three days. The skirt sold out today and now I just have the blouse which is now on back order.
What is wrong with me? Have the days of impulse buying and quick decisions gone with the wind? Will I never be able to pull out a wad of cash and simply purchase a couple hundred on lovely clothes? Who am I? Where is the gal of the past? Did she become lost in my closet?
The skirt was 19.99 which is pretty good for denim and now it is gone. Do you know what else? My skin is oh so soft and smooth. I just took a shower to help with my migraine and decided to use a sugar scrub...nice...

Back to clothes....WHY? WHY?

Here I am worrying about grocery budgets, electric bill budgets, and every other budget. Sheesh... I have become..... a married, responsible woman! GASP!

Thursday Night and it's quite late

The in-laws stopped over for the night and are now warm in cozy in the guest bedroom. Their arrival was timed ever so perfectly for a spaghetti and salad dinner. Mama Hubby provided a wonderful pound cake for the dessert in honor of Hubby's birthday that just passed.

Anyway, I am getting ready to head to bed. This weekend will be busy with Stations of the Cross, abortion clinic, Saturday Mass, yard work (or painting) choir practice, and Sunday Mass. Thankfully, I have been keeping up in the house so that is good.

Hubby told me recently that I may use is boxed garden for herbs this season. How about that!

You know, I have only ever made stock with chicken... I have never bothered to add vegetables. What do you think?

How I Budget

I break it down quite easily:

Mortgage
Phone
Groceries
Gas
Necessity
Entertainment/Vanity
Auto
Savings
Travel
Christmas/Gifts
Donations

These are general categories, but everyone will have specific categories as well. For instance, we have a monthly "bug guy" who comes out and sprays around our house. Not everyone would have this. Heck, you may have a cell phone bill, which is something I don't have.

I then keep track of all transactions/purchases/bills spent and any money earned on a weekly basis. I include everything: vending machine purchases, gas, groceries, donations. I include it all. It can sometimes be time consuming and I don't enjoy chasing Hubby for receipts, but it has worked. He has trained himself to place the receipts in a box on our foyer table. I then add those to the spreadsheet and usually keep just the receipts applicable to tax write offs.

It is amazing to see how much you spend in one month on certain items. Like I stated before, groceries usually blow me away...so do gifts. I am bad when it comes to gifts- I spend lots.

More later :-)

Monitoring Your Spending

Since my wedding day, I have been monitoring the spending within my little family. I know Hubby doesn't give me all his receipts, but for the most part I think we are fairly accurate when it comes to our budget.
My latest goal is to lower the grocery bill to a point where we are only spending three hundred per month. I don't know what I do wrong, but I definitely do not spend money correctly when it comes to groceries.
I have broken down all our income, and of course, the mortgage takes up the majority of our income, with groceries in second place.
Hubby and I pulled more coupons this week in an attempt to help budget more. We will see what happens. I know we tend to not have a lot of groceries within the house. I think I tend to buy groceries that will only last that week.
Well, today I purchased groceries that should last for a while. There were a number of sales this week at a local grocery store. Heck, I know I shouldn't by those cheap macaroni and cheese boxes, but they were .25 each! What the heck!

Today

I wore my blouse inside out until 1:00 P.M......I was at work-btw

March 23rd

This past week has been busy and today wasn't any different! I am slowly getting back into the work groove (which is quite busy at the time) just in time for me to go back to Arizona!

It will be nice to see everyone in less than three weeks from my previous visit.

Hubby and I came home to a fairly clean house, nasty yard, and an empty fridge. I headed to groceries tonight just to stock up on the essentials.

There area few deals at CVS and Walgreens that I may pick up this week. I am going to try and work that out more to my advantage again.

I need to work in the yard tomorrow night after work and then work in the house on Wednesday night.

The bookstore books need to be worked on again this week. I have got to throw an hour in of that at least. I may actually take some of that to work and handle it during my lunch hour.

Okay- I know none of this is interesting. My sister mentioned blogging about finances and maybe  I will do that. Actually, I thought of a good idea. What if I blogged about lowering my grocery bill? I am sure that has been done, but would you enjoy that? Should I start it in the month of April with a clean slate or start now? What do you think?

Anyway, I am heading to bed early tonight. I have to be at work and hour earlier and I as a bit of kilter with my sleep from this weekend.

That's my story.

CVS

I was going to blog about my CVS adventure... I was so excited! I even took a picture, but (as you know by now) I wasn't as cool as I thought. I brought all my "great buys" into the house and told my adventure to my most loving husband. He smiled, looked at the receipt, looked at the items and then.... Well, then he shattered all my domestic frugality dreams into tiny little expensive pieces! I was not the savvy shopper my little head thought I was- I was a dismal failure at CVS-ing! The horror! The pain!

Guess I will have to try again.......On a flip note, it wasn't soooo bad of a deal...was it?

Downstairs can't be finished until I tackle the stairs...

Okay, I am heading to the staircase to transfer items to their rightful or temporary place in the house... you may get more pics ... I know, you can hardly breathe with all the excitement! I think I have an obsession with taking picture of my house? Is that weird?

The Kitchen is Done!

What's in your fridge?
Green box, green hand soap, green dish soap!
After!
Before!

The Dining Room is Done!

Which way do you like the table?

The Cleaning Begins!

I thought I would blog as I clean the dining room. Yes, I have stuck to the plan. I even took pictures for you to see the mess!

Hubby and I have taken over the table with all of our passions and it really has become a free for all. I have already convinced him to let me move the magazines to the Library (that is called Mess Transferring).

I've been sipping on coffee as I go, but it just isn't giving me that groovy feeling.... no sunshine day for me, I guess... Oh, wait, it's raining! No wonder!
I still haven't decided on how I want to decorate the fireplace... I need time to shop..
Wait.... I am looking around my house... I always wanted a clean, non cluttered house, but I don't think I have that. Are any of my rooms not cluttered? This is awful! Who did this?
I just rearranged the dining room bookcase. I think it looks nice, but I am sure it isn't the correct order per Hubby's guidelines..maybe he won't notice.... Who am I kidding? That 's like saying someone won't notice if their arm is missing! The man is attached to books! :-)
So... I decided to move the dining room table into a diagonal setting. I will need your opinion on this. Let me know what you think. Which way do you prefer?
Dining room floor is mopped....on to the kitchen.
What's in your fridge? I had an open beer and decided to put it all over the defrosting chicken I am going to cook tonight. Is that weird?
What is something you think is cute in your home? Is it a certain way you decorate? A cute way you put your kitchen towels? I like the way I store my dish soap.
Okay....get ready, I am about to mop the floor! Are you excited?
All clean!
Heading to the half bathroom. Well, it is already neat and tidy. I just emptied out the trash. The pretty room is fairly clean as well. I am just going to run the duster through everything.
Okay, done with that. I ran the vaccuum, took the trash out, and made the bed in the guest bedroom. It is noon now. Can you believe I have been going at this for three hours?

Sleeping in? What's that?

It's raining..... I didn't go to the abortion clinic. You could say I don't have enough passion, but it is cold and the rain is cold and steady.
CVS? Maybe I will go depending on how much I get cleaned. Heck, maybe I should just jump into a sweater and jeans and head out there quickly...

Anyway, I attempted to sleep in, but, once again, have learned that one cannot complete such a fete when one sleeps with one's husband......

So I am relegated to the Cozy Room couch getting my motor running for cleaning and packing. Now that I look around, the room isn't so cozy. I don't know what that man does in here, but it looks like the paper bin has exploded and brought lots of other tid bits of mess!

What room should I start with today? Do I pick an easy area/room or dive into the more difficult stuff?
Hallway
Master Bedroom
Guest Bedroom
1/2 Bathroom
Bathroom
Master Bathroom
Kitchen
Dining Room
Breakfast Nook
Foyer
Pretty Room
Library
Cozy Room (we won't even bother with the second bedroom)

Hmmm.... I think I will start in the Dining Room and see where that leads me-what do you think?
I also have to make sure and iron plenty of shirts for Hubby. We can't have him all wrinkled and yucky!

That's my story!

March 13th, Friday

Soooooo sleepy....
I didn't make it to CVS, I was too tired.....

Hubby and I met at Church for Stations of the Cross and then headed to dinner, but there was a wait so by the time we ate and came home, the clock is close to tolling 10:00 P.M.! Everyone knows that I am not a night owl. Besides, I have to get up tomorrow 7ish and head to the abortion clinic for two hours. I pray that these women and men change their minds and let the child live. How sad that we are begging someone to not kill their own child. I've been reading a book called  Lime 5. Talk about heavy reading! This delves into botched abortions that lead to the murder of the child and the death of the mother. It is horribly shocking and as I read each chapter, I just can't under why so many of us trust the government's judgment of providing a "safe" place for women to "legally" abort their child. What skilled doctor would want to perform such an act? That's just it, they don't. These doctors (in some cases not) are the bottom of the barrel on the medical hierarchy. They are the slime of the earth entering a woman's body, killing the child, and causing horrendous damage to the body. On top of this, there are many cases of rape, sexual harassment, and a plethora of emotional effects.

The dishes are piling up...

I leave on Sunday for Arizona and my house is a royal mess! I really don't know how working women can keep up with it! I think my home stays neat for five minutes and that is it! By the time I come home, make dinner and then eat dinner- it is after 8:00 P.M.! ARGH!
Still, it is going on 9:00 P.M. now and I can get in at least an hour before starting the wind down.

Hubby claims that I was singing again in my sleep... very loudly. I don't know what to tell the man,  but God Bless him!

Which reminds me..... did I tell you I gave up arguing/losing my temper with Hubby? Yes... and it hasn't been easy. The last two times when we have almost "gotten into it" I yelled out the following; " God bless you! Now, please go pray three Hail Marys and then come back!". It worked both times! We will see if can keep it up-God bless me!

Tomorrow is the CVS adventure! Stay tuned and drink your Ovaltine!

March 12th

A friend of  mine mentioned a very easy recipe for the slow cooker. Hubby thinks this dish should be a side item (it is almost a soupy version of baked beans), but I disagree. I really think the beans can be the main meal.
It involves the following:
pinto beans (about a pound or so depending on your family)
pound of bacon
3/4 diced white onion
brown sugar/ honey (or both)
salt
ketchup
hot sauce

Place the pinto beans, chopped bacon, and diced onions in the pot and cover with water. Add honey and hot sauce. I don't add salt until later because of all the bacon.
Cover it and let it cook for at least 8-12 hours. I put this together last night at around 7:30 P.M. and didn't turn it off until the morning (same time approx).
Make sure you stir it a couple of times to ensure that everything cooks evenly.
I refrigerated this, headed to work, and then plugged it back in for dinner.
I then tasted and flavoured accordingly. I added brown sugar, salt, a bit more honey, ketchup, and loads of hot sauce. While that was flavoring all up, I whipped up some cheese cornbread using my cute tins my mother in law gave me for Christmas.

What you see is the finished product!

Second Sunday In Lent

Sunday afternoon, after Mass, and after feeding the Hubby. The old hour change- coupled with allergies has brought Hubby down into a weary slumber on the couch.
We were outside for the abortion clinic prayer vigil and then came home and worked in the yard until just after 6:00 p.m.. We are planting new grass in the front yard and have quite a bit of prep work before the actual sowing of seeds. I also worked in the back garden to ready an area for an herb garden. I also want to seed grass in some barren areas (the previous owners purposely did not have grass). I think all of that stirred some allergies!

Two of my choir girls are opting to not sing twice a month so as to assist a blind woman with her children during Mass. It is a blow to our small choir, but they are doing an act of charity. Can you argue with that? I am just hoping that our more timid young ladies will step up to the plate with these stronger voices out of the picture.

The weather is a glorious 75 F degrees are so.... the heat is off in the house and I have the fans going to keep us cool! This weather is so funny! We should end this week, though, in rain....

Well, I am attempting the pretzel making again! I am now positive that my water was way too hot for the yeast. I listened to my sister and she was correct in her prognosis! Hurrah! She is a winner!

In one week, I will be in my home state so we will have a lull in the posts. Don't be scared!

I will write later and tell you about the pretzels in a couple of hours or so-k?

Saturday Morning **YAWN**

It is Saturday morning just after 8:30 A.M. and here I am blogging away the morning! I am hungry, thirsty, and could go for a nice cup of coffee.... yummy.

Yesterday, after work, I headed to Stations of the Cross at our chapel. Only four people showed up, but the little group persevered! Afterwards I drove home and hit the kitchen for my first attempt at pretzel making....Attempt? How about foretold failure! Yeah, yeast and me just don't do well. I really am not sure what the heck I do to the yeast, but it never rises. I think maybe I mix it with water that is too hot. I don't know, but it doesn't work. What a waste of time and ingredients!  I am tempted to try again, but it will probably be failure! Is two tablespoons of yeast equal to one packet? I don't know..... Sister dear-help!

Sister posted about being frugal and it caused me to think a bit about the whole subject. I am not sure if I am frugal or not. I know both my sisters are VERY frugal to a fault.  When it comes to food, they are the cheap queens and I can't follow in their suit! My hubby likes meat, a lot and isn't too keen on giving it up for more than one day a week. He loves pizza, and he likes good food. He goes on these crazy binges where he wants chips, salsa, cookies, doughnuts and such! Settle down!
Eating out? Well, I have to admit that we usually eat out at least once every 7-10 days.... Bad? probably. I like to have a break from making dinner (cooking is easier than baking) doesn't everyone?

Food is the one thing we buy on a regular basis that we do try to work on lowering costs. We definitely lowered costs from January to February. We will see what happens in March...

Other than that, everything else is bills. We don't have a cell phone because it really isn't that necessary. We just lowered our phone bill. We don't have cable (I would never leave the couch). You can tell, but I cut my own hair (just hacked off 4 inches), and I don't have my nails professionally done. Um... what do women spend money on that I don't spend money on? I think that is it: cell phone, cable, nails, hair....
Hubby and I rarely go out except for dinner. Most of our excursions are Church and volunteer related, although, I would like to take voice lessons.

One thing for sure, is that I do have a savings plan in place. Every month we have money going to savings (for emergencies), Christmas savings, auto savings (insurance and repairs), travel savings (trips back home!), Church savings (donations), and then the rest is for bills and miscellaneous. Those saving accounts take up half my paycheck every month and will be a God send should one or both of us loses a job (it is looking towards September for me..visit back home here I come).
We pay off all the credit cards every month so as not to accrue interest which leaves us with our monthly bills. The bills, I think are pretty steep and I have been looking into refinancing our first mortgage, but we are buoyant and I don't think we will sink yet. We did pay for all our furniture by credit card with zero percent interest and then paid it until completely paid off.

How would I like to see us improve?
I would love for us to use coupons on a more frequent basis. The problem I find is that coupons are generally for things I do NOT purchase. I purchase my cheese in bulk, my meat in bulk (and usually on sale), eggs in bulk, vegetables in bulk. I don't buy a lot of items that usually have coupons. I know that I could still save money, but I am not that savvy. I guess in this instance, I would need to spend more time shopping the ads and creating some kind of grocery excursion plan. I would also need to go shopping in the early morning hours of a Saturday. This would ensure that I could shop in peace and at my own leisure instead of a mad rush with drones of other persons!
I also would need to make sure I cut down on those gas station purchases..ya know.. hop in, get a 20 ounce drink for a buck forty five and think you are all that. What a waste of money! Shame on me! Good thing I gave up carbonated drinks for Lent!
The second thing I would curtail is gift giving for us. Now, when it comes to other people, I like to splurge which is why I decided to set up the Christmas savings for 2009. I tracked what we spent and it topped off at 1500.00. Mind you, that I no longer give gifts to any of my siblings, except the youngest, and that during Christmas, I only give to god children (which is money or religious gifts) and my Secret Santa person. Hubby's family is different and they are a much smaller family compared to mine. They give to everyone and are very generous.  2007 we were frugal because I was without a job, and they spoiled us with so many lovely gifts! This past year, we were in a better position and I wanted to extend love and thankfulness with lovely gifts this year. I hope we did! I also purchased gifts for all my choir girls. Anyway... I am off topic. That is why we started that account. BUT hubby likes to buy himself little gifts throughout the year and I think this is a bachelor habit of his that needs to be extinguished. Granted, the flame does not burn as brightly, but it does burn. We were at Sam's the other day and he was looking and DVD's and was trying to get me to purchase a dvd... I told him he could purchase that for our anniversary or my birthday which, of course, frazzled him.  My single days are over. I can't be buying gifts all willy nilly. There are other priorities that come first and self gifts are not one of them. Besides, have you seen my house? Do you really think we need another movie, cd or book (btw Chris Isaak just released a new album and I will be splurging on that)?  We could rent out all of our books and make a profit! BTW- that was popular back in the 19th century. Many folks would pay a monthly fee to rent books from a merchant. Crazy eh?

Anyway..   I better get cracking with a bit of housework. I am heading to Mass and then the abortion clinic ( I pray that father starts on time!). There seems to be quite a number of persons who will be in attendance- God bless them all!

That's my story!

Thursday Night....

Hubby and I headed to Sam's Club tonight to stock up on the essentials. I rather prefer having him be a part of the shopping excursions. Why? Well, I can't always gauge his wild taste bud ways. Tonight he picked up black olives, lasagna, and some other funky items I would never even think to purchase!

Tomorrow is work and then heading to Stations of the Cross. Once I return home, I will try my hand at those pretzels! I can sleep in Saturday morning so it isn't so important that I go to bed early. Mass won't be until 12:30 P.M. and my house ISN'T in complete disarray.......

So,I guess last night I was talking in my sleep and poor Hubby had to be a part of it.... it kind of went like this.

Me: It is 1875

Hubby: It is not 1875

Me: Yes, it is 1875 and we have to get the blood money.

Hubby: Blood money? What blood money?

Me: The blood money of the Confederate soldiers.

Time passes

Me: Hubby! What year is this?

Hubby: It is 2009

Me: How can it be 2009 and 1874 and 1873? How did I get here?

Hubby: Through the T.A.R.D.I.S.

Me: There must have been a rip in time.

Yeah.....I don't know what to say about this...

Ember Wednesday of the Second Week in Lent

Wednesday evening about 9:30 P.M. and I am winding down for the night.  Today was a no television day which gave me more time to work on more important things.
Wait! First things first! I need to catch you up on what has been going on in my little world.

Tuesday I drove to work without a problem. There was snow (there still is snow) and black ice, but I managed to drive safely to and from work. Work was uneventful until the afternoon when a co-worker was terminated (I mentioned this person before in a previous posting).
After work, I stopped by the store to pick up a few things and came home with a headache rapidly increasing in pain. It turned into a full on migraine with the lovely side effects of nausea. Ugh. I quickly headed to bed before 9:30 P.M. and slept the pain away.

Work was quiet today. I came home and made a chicken stir fry, washed  dishes, prepped Hubby's lunch, laundry, ironing, cleaned bathroom, read, showered, and now here I am!

I want to make the pretzel recipe my sister mentioned in her blog, but I think I will have to wait until Sunday afternoon. The dough has to rise for 90 minutes or so and I just don't have enough evening hours to wait on it unless I plan to stay up very late.

The prayer vigil is this weekend and I have one couple already planning to be there. They have also come to the abortion clinics a few times before-which has been wonderful!

Oh! I just heard that my two nephews slept over at Grandma's house without a problem for the first time this past weekend! How wonderful is that!

Monday Morning and I am not at work.

It is Monday morning and I stayed home from work. I did not want to risk driving in all this snow especially with no experience.
I spent about an hour last night playing in the snow  and walking about to enjoy the scenery. It was rather lovely!
We kept the curtains open in our bedroom as we faded off to sleep. The beauty of the snow falling in the unearthly quiet was so surreal. Gorgeous!
I spent most of Sunday night sick with some kind of bug that wouldn't let me keep anything in my tummy! With the combination of the snow and the sick tummy- I wasn't about to head to work! So, here I am awake and getting ready to tidy the kitchen and maybe do some painting...

First Sunday of Lent

Here we are full circle with another week gone by. The rain has been non stop since Saturday morning (maybe even earlier) and will most likely convert into snow by evening. The ground is absolutely saturated and the temperature is sitting at about 33F degrees! Cold!
Hubby and I came home from Mass not too long ago and have just finished our lunch. He is now settling into a nap and I may follow very soon!

That is all for now- I may edit and add more later!

Later....

After we ate lunch, I went downstairs to clean up a bit. I put the remainder of the dishes in the dishwasher. As I reached under the kitchen sink, I accidentally knocked a bottle of vinegar all over the place! I grabbed it quickly and then noticed that a scrub pad was completely soaked in the vinegar. I picked up the scrub pad and then noticed the pad had HANDS! What! Wait! How!
I dropped it to the floor as I realized that it was a dead mouse and nooooooo scrub pad!

I am thinking the mouse had eaten poison and crawled into the house to die. Otherwise, it had been eating some toxic cleaning products under the sink.

Anyway, I ran upstairs to where Hubby was napping:

Me: Hubby, there is a dead mouse on the kitchen floor. Can you come get it?

Hubby: I can't, I am napping, I just can't do it.

Me: Please! Help me! Get the dead mouse!

Hubby: I have a rodent phobia.

Yes, he didn't even get up! What the heck! So.... I took care of the mouse, and cleaned everything with ammonia....yuck.

It has been snowing non-stop. I think we have hit about five to six inches. It is beautiful. I have been trying unsuccessfully to load pictures with my antiquated camera. It just won't work-such a pity. I will have to develop them and have them put on a cd or something to make it work.

Okay, that is all for now.
